The Design

Designed by Dr. William Battle in 1903 and officially approved by the Board of Regents in 1905, the Seal of the University of Texas is an iconic symbol of the Forty Acres. Dr. Battle, a professor of Greek at the University of Texas, combined style inspired from centuries old academia and classic elements from the State Seal of Texas.

The motto was inspired by the famous quote from Republic of Texas President Mirabeau B. Lamar, "A cultivated mind is the guardian genius of democracy." Dr. Battle consulted with fellow UT professor and head of the Latin Department, Dr. Edwin Fay, who suggested condensing it to Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.
